Bit the bullet today and ordered a Tyne models Ironsider, calling it Ironsider as there is already a Northsider in our club. Really like the hull shape, and finish. Will probably order the prop from Tyne models as well, the price is good for a large prop.

: Re: Northsider Build
: lightshipman March 31, 2010, 12:38:59
Today I cut out the clearing ports, and fitted the beam shelf to support the deck on the starboard side, its a long boat this, I didn't have enough clamps to do both sides of the beam shelf. And trimmed the excess grp flashing around the bulwarks, about an 1/8 to 3/16 ths all round.
Andy
: Re: Northsider Build
: lightshipman April 01, 2010, 12:25:41
The 2nd beam shelf fitted, this slowed me down a bit, I like to use epoxy resin which is slower to go off, so it was one side a dayfor the beam shelf, next job is the deck cross beams, make and fit the rudder and rudder tube.

I stay at the caravan club site in Bristol occasionally, so it more than likely will have a run in the floating harbour
: Re: Northsider Build

most of the deck beams now fitted, rudder built and fitted, keelson built and fitted, bit of an engineering job that, silver soldered the keelson to the hog plate, tapped the keelson to make the rudder removable for repair, the whole thing is epoxied in, will find a nice size washer to go around the stub of prop shaft and solder some round bar around the cut out for strength.

The rudder tube is fabricated from  a cut down Mobile Marine Models standard prop shaft, I figured the amount of thrust coming off this prop a lot of back wash will head up the steering tube and fill the boat with water, so fitted  tube with a brass bush top and bottom, this can now be packed with silicon grease to make it absolutely water tight. The rudder stock is 5mm stainless, plenty of strength needed here.

: Re: Northsider Build

Thanks for the positive comments, I have now fitted a Hitech metal geared servo for the steering, the deck now to be marked out, cut out and fitted. Ballast test in my pond completed, going to need a lot of ballast, any one know where to get hold of a load of lead shot for ballast, can fit a fair bit around the propshaft,  and also I have some lead weight about 2kg each, should resin in nicely, drive battery will be 12v/7ampHr (2.7kg)from the South West model show, or two 6volt 10amphr 2.00kg each in series. Hope Model Power are attending!!! ;). Two 6volt 4.5amphr batts in series to run the sound unit land ights another 1.6kg, these are spare so may as well use them.
RUDDER
The rudder is a piece of old Sails etc International One Metre laminated wooden fin, cut down to fit, I am going to fit strips on the trailing edge to make it into a 'Schilling rudder', should help manouvreability, seeing as I didn't fit a kort nozzle.

: Re: Northsider Build
: lightshipman April 08, 2010, 11:58:08
The steering servo fitted, Hitech metal geared.

I made the inspection hatch for the steering gear a little bit larger than the drawings.

Finished the rudder, its hard to make out the triangular fillets on the trailing edge to make it like a schilling rudder, I didn't go the whole hog because the schilling rudder isn't very good for going astern, not that any rudder is, just they are worst than a standard rudder.

Its a big job this one, I am going to the South West model Show next weekend, will take the Ironsider 'as is' at the time, but will take my Nangee and Steam Launch for the show, will hopefully attack the Ironsider on my return, as I will have a further week off.

More progress today, sprayed the hull and deck. Photo of boat on the reworked patio that stopped work on the boat for a week.!!!

Did a ballast check this evening, in the fish pond, I fitted the 12v 10amp/hr battery I bought  from The Component Shop at the show last weekend, added 3 lumps of lead at 1.3kg each, not quite down to the marks but not far off, probably another two kilo's, but will wait now till all the electronics fitted.

Adding a flat bar to the leading edge of the bulwark stanchions is a nice detail touch also.

I did try to bend the plasticard to create that effect, just like the real thing, but you lost more stanchions than you gained, I think it was 4 tries to get one which wasn't very good, I also thought of doing it like you said, much more practical.

Engine trials today, all went well.
handles brillaintly, stops quicky with a realistic swirl of water round the stern, going astern is as expected, very slow to respond.

: Re: Northsider Build

Loads of room inside for electronics, battery fits under the speaker, speaker still has to have a housing built and ound tube fitted. Also electronic switcher to be fitted for lighting.

Wheelhousing now starting to look as if it is being worked on, the vents for E.R cut out and louvres fitted to funnel vents, getting close to spraying the wheelhouse and accomadation block, got to find the correct colour for the brown

: Re: Northsider Build
: lightshipman May 07, 2010, 20:46:54
I am trying to work out how to fit the wheelhouse windows, the layup is so thick in places and it is hard to get in and rub it down, I almost cut the wheelhouse off and built my own in plasticard, it is still not out of the question. Or the other alternative to cut the wheelhouse roof off, rub down the inside of the wheelhouse to even thickness and then refit the roof, the layup is sprayed in I think and it is very uneven in thickness especially in the corners.

A little update, need to get more updated photos really as the boat is more advanced again than shown here, trying to balance work with pleasure, but the work side of the scale way over weight.
Anyway, made the flying bridge, have started fitting handrails and vents, the wheelhouse interior is lined and the wheel and nav gear fitted.
