HI MIKE ; It is good to see old FREDA  again . I was on her in 62 . That was one of the first to have a computer in the engine room .  The chief hated the thought of computers . It sure was a tuff comp. to survive a cup of urine a day , for over a year . The company thought is was the salt air that did it in . HA HA HA                 PUFFIN

Very nice photo,is she ex `Capable`or `Careful` built 1946 twin-screw steam reciprocation of 3000Hp(I) ? It is purely a guess on my behalf at first sight I thought it was the `Warden` built 1945 twin-screw diesel of 4000HP(B). I am probably wrong on all accounts and would be grateful if someone could enlighten me

To Todd,
Hi Jim, Re Tugs nice pic, it isn't Capable or Careful but an Assurance class tug. Could be any one of the last 16 of the 21 in the class. Five were lost, one to Enemy Action at Dunkirk and the rest due to weather or grounding. Four ended up in Canada; 2 sailed under the Dutch flag; 2 spent their entire lives with the RN and the rest ended their time under the Greek or Italian flags.
Cheers Fred

: Todd May 15, 2009, 05:34:11
Once again Fred you have come-up with the goods.
Ta very much.
The only `A` tugs I can find for that era under Admiralty auspice are;
NAME                   BUILT           G.TONNAGE            HORSE POWER           ENGINES
`ACCORD`............1958..............641......................1600.......................MOTOR
`ADVICE`.............1958..............641......................1600.......................MOTOR
`AGILE`...............1958..............641......................1600.......................MOTOR
`ANTIC`..............1943..............597......................1350.......................STEAM RECIP.
The first three maybe too late to be included and I think the `Antic` was one of the class you quoted ? ? ?
Jim

I knew I had another somewhere and have just come across this pic of the "Active" which I took Sitra anchorage Bahrain.
nb:all the `windows` are port-holes even on the bridge.. ;)

Same here FOOTSKI, I am obviously used to seeing the latest tugs and from my fond memories of being with my dad on the piers at Lowestoft & Great Yarmouth in the 80's, to see the older tugs really shows me how develpoments and changes have progressed.

I am lovinig the photos and KEEP THEM COMING  :) :) :)

Two more `North` boats.

Two `North` boats that I do not have photos of are the two diesel ones ie: "North Loch" & "North Isle".The others were oil-fired steam tugs. In all there were 9 boats with the prefix "North" (Alex tugs were affectionately known as the "Fliers" or the "North Enders" and their call sign by whistle/horn was `Blow 5`...5 blasts of the ships whistle.)

ST "BULLGER"  Leith Salvage & Towage Co.Ltd.

DoB.......1907 at Barrow as ST "CARTMEL"
Changed name 1934 to ST "BULLGER"

Mined 13th March 1941, 15miles North of the Tyne near Coquet Island.
(Apparently the mine were laid by the Luffwaffe.)

The Good news was that all hands survived.

: willowgarth June 20, 2009, 05:30:39
Hi Todd,
Found a pic of North Isle But couldn't find one of North Loch.
Those guys were certainly lucky on the Bullger, one of Rea's tugs, the Poolgarth hit a mine when going to the aid of a ship and a bloke who saw it said there was nothing to be seen of her when the smoke cleared.
Cheers Fred
: Re: Gallery - Image Resource - Pictures only !

Cheers Fred.
I was on the Loch for a while and a funny thing about them was that even quite modern in those days they still had anthracite fires both in the galley and engineroom (for the central heating/hot-water systems.) The bunker for the anthracite was accessed by a man-hole on the after-deck.....a total pain in the "you-know-where"  :D
I have added the pic to my files...Ta once again
(Never satisfied were we...Going from bunkering twice a week (coal) to twice a month (oil) to once a month (diesel)  :o  ;) )

Some more 'Steamers' from all over.

1) 'Anna Liffey'....Built 1917....217ton.....8ooHP....steam/recip.
    Dublin Port & Docks Board.

2) 'Haregraig'.......Built 1936....202ton.....550HP....steam/recip (2)

Back to steam again.

1) 'James Lamey'  quite a big Liverpool tug, just how big can be judged in the second picture with her young 'brother William' laying second off to her.

2) This photo was taken in the early sixties during the seamans strike. During this strike we were only allowed to berth ships and not to help them break strike by helping them sail.

Hi Jim,
That's a great old tug, is she Australian?
Fred
Hi Fred,  Again you hit the nail on the head.
The info I have is built....1913 in South Shields.  2 X back-to-back boilers giving her a bollard pull of 12ton.
Scapped in 1970 at the ripe old age of 57.
Apparently she did a salvage off Spain on her delivery voyage which paid her purchase price and travelled the rest of the journey with the assistance of sails to conserve fuel.

ST 'Contest'
Built....1933 by Alexander Hall Co.Ltd. Aberdeen.  For Elliot Steam Tug o.Ltd.
Served London Tug Ltd until she was scrapped in 1972 by T W Ward,Grays,Essex.

Good News::: Her sister-ship 'Challenge' has been preserved. (No details where etc ?)

Hi Jim,
What I meant to say in my post was 'Is she Australian built', any way, thanks for the interesting info.
I had a look round the Contest when she was in rhe Albert Dock a year or so ago, she's in fine shape and well looked after.
Cheers Fred.

Liverpool Scene 1960.

Lamey Tugs.In the foreground 'Irene Lamey'
                                  next 'Anita Lamey'
                                  next 'William Lamey'
The crews of these used to get very upset when we asked if they had "passed their test yet" (The big 'L' on the funnel---learner plates ;D ;D)

The vessel to the left is either the 'Salvor' or 'Vigilant' MDHB salvage/buoy tender boats.
I am not sure which this one is but it is one of the above mentioned.  ::)  ::)

: Re: Gallery - Image Resource - Pictures only !

'GHALLENGE'

1) This is as she began 'life'.

2) This is with the added structure for'w'd of the bridge & immediately behind it.(The part with the 'Bofers' on it.)

3) This give a better view of the for'w'd 'dodger' and you can see that she is being well looked after.
(Personally I don't think these add-ons do anything for her looks but one must also bear in mind that orginally she never even had a wheelhouse   :D  :D  :D )
