So I fancied a little fishing boat to take with me down to Cornwall, something like a Dory or simiular 10-12ft ....decided to trawl through good ol' Ebay to see what I could find ....oooooh I thought there's some bargain boats on here !! ......so some how the little fishing boat for down in Cornwall ended up being a Yacht moored in Southampton !!

My good lady and I used to do alot of sailing BC (Before Child) and thought it was an idea opportunity to rekindle our previous adventures !....with boat bought and equiped out we now sail up and down the Southampton Waters (about a 9 mile stretch top to bottom) practicing for future trips !

As many of you are aware Southampton is one of the busiest shipping ports in the world and so there are many great sites to see .....and dodge !

Here are some pictures of the sites we see ....

First off.....EVA MAY

Not a bad day for you Tugmaster sailing up and down Southampton water.
I went down to Southampton for the International tug convention back in 1995 and Solent Towage had just taken delivery of there Thrax tug which they had going through its paces around Southampton docks.

Thrax then had just replaced the Tito Neri at Solent Towage which they had chartered whilst the waiting for the two big escort tugs to be built (Thrax / Silex), and they were the superb looking tugs and seeing them on a few trips to the Isle of Wight which passes by Fawley oil terminal in the last few years they really do look after them and there paintwork is immaculate.
Any members who are registered on the Tugtalk web-site there's some nice photo's of the Solent Towage tugs and pictures of the Tito Neri tug in the Solent Towage livery.

OK, if you've got the camera in one hand, a beer in the other, who's steering the boat?

I took some photo's this afternoon at Southampton as Svitzer have just had their new addition to their fleet the Svitzer Adira arrive from Turkey. The photo's show the new tug moored up in the south-coast port along with other members of the Svitzer fleet, Eston, Bargate and the Ferriby

Dutch tug operator Kotug/Smit have now set up a towing operation in Southampton after a shipping line started delivering ships into Southampton as Kotug/Smit have the contract to handle their ships in Europe and have now have four tugs stationed in the south-coast port here in the UK two of them are seen here ZP Boxer and Smit Tiger.
I hope there of interest

Here's the last two taken today of the Svitzer fleet at Southampton which shows four of the six tugs the company operates in the port Svitzer Adira, Eston, Bargate and the Ferriby are seen moored up here.
The Svitzer Eston was originally intended to be a Tees (Middlesbrough) tug hence the name and she's also registered at the north-east port but she's never set foot in the north-east as she went to various other ports i.e London, Swansea but once in Southampton she stayed put.

Kotug aren't doing much business in Southampton at the moment, only did 9 jobs last month and only about 4 so far for May. They only have two contracts at the moment.

I've noticed that with the movements of their tugs on certain websites but obviously Kotug/Smit wouldn't have tugs stationed in Southampton with it was losing them money but they've bought in some decent tugs and time will tell I suppose. I think it's a new shipping line that's now having their container ships go into Southampton and as Kotug/Smit handle the contract to berth their ships in Europe i.e Bremmerhaven and Rotterdam so I think that's the reason why they started operations in Southampton.
Again I'm not involved in the towage industry I just have an interest in it.

Photo's taken last Friday on the Isle of Wight ferry from Southampton whilst passing the oil refinery at Fawley. The photo's show the Solent Towage's tug voith Apex handling a tanker with the help from Svitzer Bargate, Solent Towage tugs normally handle all the oil tankers that come into Fawley but on this occasion there was another tanker due into Fawley and one of their tugs was escorting the ship around the IOW so it mean't that the fleet were a tug down at this busy time so help was in hand from the Southampton Svitzer fleet in the Svitzer Bargate.
