: KENDAL. Next one on the bench.
: model tugman October 17, 2017, 07:33:14
This is the Kendal, she was built in 1972 at the Hong Kong Whampoa shipyard in 1972 as the Kau Lung.
J P Knight ( Rochester ) bought to the U K in 1979 and re named her Kendal.
The build is at 1/24th scale giving a hull length of 53 and a beam of 15.
The hull is built using a double diagonal planking system  and the Kort Nozzle is 5 internal dia.
Superstructure is 1/8th and 1/16th ply.

Great job on the hull. How did you support the planking during construction?

Plenty of stringers fore and aft Steve, not a recommended method mate . Ill stick to planking I think.
Although I didnt make the hull it was made by a chap who was a Taylor.
Brilliant job though

Superstructure looks good - that aircraft type ply that you are using?
Windows came out well.

Hi Mike it is 1/8th and 1/16th birch plywood matey. A bugger to cut but nice and strong.
The funnel is 1/32nd ply over 1/8th formers.

The story is that when she first come to the Medway she was down by the head with Cock Roaches!

Supposedly too years and years to finally kill them all off!

A little progress on Kendal , the motor is in, the steering sorted and a nice 5 prop fitted , the hull has been given a couple of coats of finishing resin and the bulwark capping are on.
: Re: KENDAL. Next one on the bench.
: model tugman October 24, 2017, 06:58:20
A little more progress today, bulwark knees, rubbing band and bow fender in place.

I hope you've got a Hi-Ab to be able to help you launch the tug at the lakeside there George WOW what do you reckon the displacement will be when's she's finished???
Keep the good work coming and keep us all posted.
No building for me at present as work brings me to North Yorkshire 200+ miles from my workshop.

Kevin

Very nice work, George as usual.
Those fenders look great. I assume the rubber can come out so that you can paint it.
: Re: KENDAL. Next one on the bench.
: Kev30 October 24, 2017, 14:30:11
Did you mean kilo's or pounds regarding displacement???
That's a heavy model you've got there!!!!
Again please keep us posted re progress
Regards
Kevin

Yes the fender pad is removeable, its just the top plate that is fixed, so all the rubber comes off, and its Kilos, she is 53 x15 so quite a lump, but all ballast will be removeable for transport.

Just been looking at the JP Knight website there are some interesting subjects there.
The Kite and Kent are especially nice, and those 2 Japanese tugs would be interesting.
Any plans to build any more of their boats?

Hi Steve thanks, yes the winches and all of the wheelhouse stuff is home made except the telegraphs, they are key rings really but very effective. Geo

Nice job there George. I saw the Svitzer Monarch the other week now that will make a nice working model how about building that one as that's not to far for you to go and get detailed photo's down there at Sheerness as I'm not sure if the Monarch or her sister the  Ganges ever adventure up the Thames to Gravesend / Tilbury???

That turned out really great, I think you're getting the hang of this now.
Can't wait for the next one, although I guess the workshop is about to get its Christmas transformation soon.
