Model Timber Supplier
« on: February 11, 2008, 09:16:25 »
Hy Guys.
I have a few hulls that I have to start /finish, and I dont want to keep going down to my nearest Model shop which is  an aprox 24 mile round trip. So does anyone know of a model timber supplier online, where I can order a few sheets of lets say 2...3 mm ply ect.  I have found a firm that supplies hardwoods, but no ply, I have never tried  the styrene sheet material, but would have a go at it, maybe there is someone who can supply that in small quantities.
Cheers

Bosun,

Do you have a timber supplier nearer, if so ask them for the price of birch ply. My local model shop charged about 9 for a 4' x 1' piece of 1/4 ply. I got a 8' x 4' sheet cut in to 4 sections for 21.

For what ever reason when I asked for a 5 ply sheet of birch I was told they don't come like that anymore but the birch I bought was 5 ply.

Hy Marc  (riggers)
I have tried my local timber yard and they only do the three ply stuff at 1/4. I intend to have a look around tomorrow at a few local stockists, but dont hold out much hope, we will have to see. We recently bought some wardrobes for the spare room  from B&Q, the drawer bottoms were thin and flexible, no good for their intended use but great for my tugs, I changed the ply and convinced the Mrs that the drawers would be much stronger, wish I could get hold of some more.

Hi Bosun, you could always try these folk

http://www.modellersmate.co.uk/wood.htm

there is a postal charge which is not cheap but then when you order a decent amount of material it becomes bearable.

A gerat range of HIPS (Styrene  / plasticard ) in sheets upto 56"  long.

cheers

Jim

Hy Hamish
Had a quick look at that site last night, will check them out today. Might try the plastic sheet, never used it before, but I do like wood.
Many Thanks
