You are right on Mike, we were going into Pt. Hope shipyard with the Quadra Queen II and the Seaspan Star was assisting.

Not the first, second, third or the last, but one of the 'in-betweens' I worked on, DEA SKIPPER, the former Smit-Lloyd 105, Built 1973, GRT 1356 T. ;

And another from the same company, the DEA CAPTAIN, I am not sure of the previous number but she was obviously a Smit-Lloyd tug.

My first tug was of the Seguin. She was launched in 1884.Measuring 100 ft.in lenght and 20 ft. width. Her 26x26 surface condensor engine was replaced in 1909 with a compound triple expansion engine
giving Her approximately 12 knots. She towed for 85 years from New York on the Hudson river and as far South as Virginia, retiring in 1967.

the first tug i worked on as boy was a small craft tug (tosher) called the silverlit. I often think back to my times as a kid when i used to go with my uncle on the PLAUDIT in the school holidays, that smell of diesel and carbolic soap, the loverly warmth of the fwd cabin when the range had been lit and having bovril at 11am. the last comment about the bucket reminded me of a happening that i hope wont put to many people off dinner... the skipper, there were only 2 of us on this boat and as a raw apprentice i was not even loosely referred to as the hand! any how he said to me as we were running up river light tug one evening to go and draw a bit of water in the dip bucket from the overboard discharge and he then said "keep her straight and on the wet bits" and with a newspaper under his arm went from the cockpit down 2 steps into the engine room, Clang went the small steel door. next thing was CRASH CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK.. then the shout " F*%$@££ take her out of gear!" i did and the clunking slowed down and stopped i opened the engine room door and he came out like scalded cat. it seems the lanyard on the draw bucket had ended up getting caught round the open prop shaft and before getting crushed it had done a a few revs and re-decorated the engine room... now we have showers and proper lavs.. LUXURY !
