Meccano gears for towing winches
« on: September 14, 2011, 18:17:55 »
I was looking for some sort of worm gear winch set-up like Ray has on his tugs. I've discovered that Meccano has some brass gears that look suitable for building an towing winch. Anyone play with these sets as a younger person (the better question is: does anyone still play with their Meccano set...haha ;D) and are the gears worth looking into?

Thanks!

Yes, they do work.

I've used them on a towing winch before.

TAMAYA gear boxes for cars work real well and they are very small ,and you can set them to your own gear ratio . I like the 240 / 1 set up.

But if I want more speed.
Or more power than I use belts.

I like your idea of using Meccano gears Tugboat Andy but the biggest problem is getting hold of the Meccano gears unless your name is James May? ;)

HI ALL ; How do you stop them from running backwards when there is a load on it . The only way that I know is with a worm gear ,as it act's as a brake .                 PUFFIN

Hey puff meccano do worm gears or should I say at least did worm gears
Yes that acts as a good brake or you could use a latch on the main drive gear same as 1:1 on trailer winch's doesn't have to be spring loaded if u use gravity and just connect it to a small lever to feed it out :)

Hi Glen,

Will be at Country Maples RV park in Chemainus for a week on Aug 12.  If we can arrange a meet, I can show you the gear unit I use for my Nederland tow winch.  There is no back sliding on it.

Morning Puff,
If you go on eBay type meccano worm drive
It's part #52 the later ones are plastic the early ones are all brass
Maybe try asking if they would post to US ? I'm sure one of them would if postage is covered hope this helps :)
