A CONVERSION FROM FOSSA TO RANA
« on: April 29, 2012, 06:56:37 »
This is my latest project a conversion of an old model into something different,  when I was given the model and a couple of pictures of what it looked like when originally built it did not look like the pictures at all , there was only the superstructure with no funnel, no mast no fittings and a bow that was more like a large spoon than anything, so I thought well here goes I will make her into the Gasillee tug Rana  she was built in 1951 by Cochrane's and had a 5 cyl M45M Polar 2stroke diesel engine,
she looked more like a steam tug than a diesel but that was company policy in those days, Bags of funnel power.

Well the first thing that I did was throw away the remaining superstructure, and cut off the awfull bow and remade it into something more like a craft tug. the bulwarks and original deck were also removed and put in the bin, so after using a lot of bridging paste and filler the new bow and deck was fitted. and new casings made from birch ply.

Just to be different I am going to build her as originally built with an open top wheelhouse, so that was the next thing I tackled when happy with that I made the Funnel this is a typical London craft tug thing that hinges down to get beneath the low bridges on the Thames this was made from rolled 1/32nd ply well soaked in hot water and rolled around a tin can of the correct size , let it all dry then remove the former (tin can) and glue up the tube from two layers of ply, then cut and shape it .

hi  ^-^ Mike personaly I think the white wheelhouse looked more like a garden shed and that she looked right when she was built with the tall funnel and brown casing with the buff trimmings she was a PROPER Thames craft tug   angel
