MIRIUM MORAN BUILD Thread
« on: November 25, 2012, 04:03:40 »
Thanks to tugs 53 (Mike ) putting me on to a contact at Moran Towage I have obtained a complete set of plans for this classic American tug, she is 105ft long by 32 ft beam and has a very usefull 3,300 hp.
I will be building her at 1/24th scale giving 52 and a half inches long by a whopping 16 inches beam, although not originally fitted with kort nozzles I shall be fitting them to this build for added power and manouverability.
the plans were blown up to 1/24th from 1/48th scale and the lines transferred to card board and cut out these were then placed on the building board to check fairness etc, after that they were then traced onto 9mm ply and cut out.
these were then fixed to the building board and lined up with the keel, cardboard was again used to get the correct shapes for the bottom, side, and chine skins, and were then drawn onto 1/8th birch ply and cut out ready for fitting to the frames and keel, the stringers from 1/4" square spruce were added next.

after which the skins were fitted to the waiting skeleton,   more to follow
the skins were then fixed to the

Nice one George. Glad to see you are keeping busy. Looks like a fairly straight forward hull to build. I would not mind building her in 1.32.

The Moran tugs are certainly popular with photographers.

I have several shots of the Moran tugs at Baltimore. Also, have several from when they were Curtis Bay. Moran has some nice looking boats.
