Fleet Tender to a tug. Is it spring madness?.
« on: April 13, 2013, 07:50:18 »
Brother Peter was given an almost complete kit for for the Loyal Moderator fleet tender, but there were no instructions or drawings with it , so he passed it on to me with the words, Ill bet you cant make a tug out of that.  Silly Boy.
So after cutting the bulwarks off and widening the stern by 50mm, I fitted two 70mm korts and props along with two 900 size motors. next came a nice wooden deckand the main casing was also made from wood but was turned through 180 degrees to put the narrow end to the bow. I have used the kit wheelhouse but made a new funnel. new Bulwarks were fitted a bit more tug like, and a working towing winch is to be used , a few bits and pieces from the spares box and a few of the kit fittings and I think she is looking very tuglike (for a fleet tender).

Looks good - those motors & props should give it lots of pulling power?

Nice job, don't know if you know but a lot of these vessels were built by Richards, who were mainly tug builders. So they do have a 'tug' pedigree.

Well she went very well Bags of power, a little twitchy on the steering at full speed but all things considered not bad.  Just a couple of pictures as I could not controll her and take pictures at the same time,  the working winch was very good though.    Geo
