Bow thruster size.
« on: September 07, 2013, 17:23:43 »
Hello,
How do we work out what size Bow thruster is needed? Is there a formula? I have a barge, single screw, and highly un manoeuvrable. I wish to fit a bow thruster to her, to help the manoeuvrability.
How big? Draft is a scale 1.8m (50mm) Approx.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Hello Boman. . .bow thruster size formula? Good question. I also would like to know
a sort of "rule of thumb" method for choosing a bow thruster.

I must confess that I can't figure out the size of your barge. I would like to know
its length, width, how many inches of water it draws, and its weight. A picture would
be worth a thousand words here. Try to post one if you could.

I also am working on a design for a barge that is powered and utilizes bow thrusters.
You will receive many suggestions and I'll be reading them also, thank you for your
question and welcome aboard, Boman,

If your making it you can over size it a bit. If your buying one you are now limited to whats made.
Some of the units out there are about 1" dia. or 25 mm.
The motor of choice has a bit as in performance .
In scale probably about half the prop dia.
Some fellows just use a window or headlamp washer pump .
Water movement is what makes the unit more powerful .
Cost and availability are others.

These pics are from my Sketch up file of the boat. How it will look after refit.

Length just over a meter. Width 165mm. Weight  I guess a kilo or so.( I have no real idea)

Single screw. Goes well. Built approx. 20 years ago. First boat I ever built.

The 1 " unit would probably work the best with a 400 driving it .
At a meter long and only a kilo in displacement . A windy day would rec havoc on such a vessel .
I have seen small warships not even get away from the dock , with small gusts of wind.
