Hi John

I have been using Simoize Acrylic Satin this has good coverage and from Europarts online its cheap. Depends what finish you want, dont seem to make a gloss version, but Halfords do.

If you what a brush on, try Homebase acrylic comes in small to very large tins, cheaper than rattle cans and can be thinned for spraying.

Hope this helps, there are others but I haven't used them

Hello John,

Let us know if you are, like Mark pointed out, going to spray or brush.
Also, let us know what part of the world you live. This way, we can
suggest brands.

I'm in the US, so for spraying small parts, I use "Varathane" spray-can
clear, gloss, polyurethane. Careful to not over spray. . .light coat and
after drying, light second coat and all. It is also UV tolerant and pretty
tough.

For brushing I buy "Man O'War" brand, marine "Spar Varnish". It has
Maximum UV protection and an almost luscious quality to work with.

Perfect John. . .there are many hundred fellow tugboat builders in your part of the globe. I'll bet that those that live in the UK there will give you some brand names and all.

And, thank you for the question John. I am working on painting my tug's superstructure and you have given me some ideas for making the topside even more tugboat looking. . .I think that's how you say it.

Post a picture of your tug. . .I haven't heard of the gray turning color but now that I have, I've clicked the "Notify" option at the top here. I know someone on the Forum here has seen the gray/yellow/varnish dilemma and I'm all ears as to what happened and what to do.

Here is a "Photoshop" I made using one of Vancover BC's, "Seaspan" tugboats as a model for my tug's new paint job.

John
The nature of all Varnish is yellow color transparent
A clear coat from a auto place might be a better option .
Or paint the grey after the varnish is done .
If you open a can of coating and its yellow looking it will turn yellow . Rattle can clear coat stuff can be yellow as well, If bought at the hardware store.
Lacquers tend to be clear .

Hi,

I recently did my hull, I hand brushed Vallejo matt varnish on mine lightly rubbing down between coats. I ended up applying around 8 coats in total. I don't think you need a massively huge tin to do this either as a little of this stuff goes a long way!

HI Freightliner

I have heard good reports of the Vallejo paint range, how did you find the brush marks in your matt finnish?

Have you sprayed any of there paints??

Always open to try new products, specially if they are modelling specific,
