Westminster Apache
« on: May 22, 2008, 07:37:22 »
Here's a great shot of the Smit tug Westminster Apache, at work in the Fraser River, BC Canada, taken by member 'kingsway'.

Member 'puffin' has a great model of this tug, with enough power that he pulled the bollards right off the front of my barge!! ;D

Hi Mike, I wonder what the comment was when you viewed the sequence of events on straining towline! Was it "Oh Boll 0& 5" ?

:D A real nice looking tug anyway, I do like th Pacific NW ruggedness. just a shame the bollards weren't up to  the job  ;)

Hi Jim:
I've since drilled and bolted the bollards thru the deck of the barge.
Did'nt have time before the last regatta, so just glued them on.
** Good Tip: Always bring CA glue with you!!**
I'm hoping 'Puffin' will show us all some pictures of his 'Apache' model, which is under re-construction!  ;)

Cheers

Hi Ray:

Glen bought her, in pieces, and rebuilt the whole boat! :)

He did a fantastic job, as usual 8) 8)

Like that winch! Bits and pieces or...?
Big jump from when I last saw it - something about being retired bantered about!

Good job.

I think you're refering to 'Flanking Rudders'.

Anyone else have any idea's??

Here's a picture of one of the sisterships to your 'Apache', showing lots of deck detail. Thought you may find this usefull!

Cheers

Hi Mike

Nice photo there - gives lots of ideas for deck stuff!
Always like those - need to get a winch sorted out, mine look pretty sparton compared to other tug models!

""HI MIKE ; What are those rudders called that have a bar at 90  degrees on the trailing edge of the rudder"" .......................Im not sure about the bar your refering to Glen but the Apache doesnt have flanking rudders....Flanking rudders are FWD of the nozzle and are mostly used on the towboats of the US interwaterway ,the big pusher boats you would see on the Missisippi. The Apache doesnt have Becker type rudders either but it does have a Jastram type system which allows independant use of each side instead of a normal use.Apache has 4 rudders 2 on each nozzle.the rudders on the Apache are mounted on the bottom as well with a pintle pin hope this helps......................Paul
