My wife went thru that surgery for the second time, about 6 weeks ago.  First time was 18 years ago and still going strong.  The latest was a lot less invasive and she is almost back to normal.  Still tires on long haul walking, but doing a lot better.  Only had to have a spinal, so was awake thru the whole procedure.  Says its the only way to have surgery.  Hope this is some encouragement for your wife.
