Ice breaker Fennica
« on: September 13, 2017, 07:12:57 »
In addition to special shape of the wheelhouse, there is some high tech shaping of the hull, wouldn't you say?

Spotted at the shipyard of Rauma 7 July, 2017.

Any idea how the hull indentations are supposed to help?

The red ring indicates a wider part in the front of the hull, aft of this the hull narrows in for easier passage in ice, i.e. she breaks a channel which is actually wider the main part of her hull. This lessens ice pressure on the ship sides.

The blue ring is an ice "guide" aimed at guiding the broken ice upwards and away from the azimuth thrusters.

Hope in the not too distant future, we get to see a video of this ship in action.  Any dates for launching?

OOps!  Just pulled up the info on the Fennica on Marine Traffic and see that she is already in service.  Maybe more digging will show me a video of her ice busting.

There is an article about the hull of an ice breaking vessel.
Nothing about Fennica's peculiar shapes, though...
